The Australian Government, through the ACCESS 2 program, is expanding its support for rehabilitation services in Cambodia by strengthening Hospital-Based Rehabilitation Units (HBRUs), including Prosthetics and Orthotics (PO) services, Speech Therapy services, and Physiotherapy services at Provincial Referral Hospitals (PRHs).
Recently, the Australian Government handed over additional physiotherapy equipment to Siem Reap Provincial Referral Hospital (PRH). This follows an initial handover in January 2026 and responds to growing demand for rehabilitation services. From January to June 2026, a total of 2,871 clients received physiotherapy services at Siem Reap PRH, representing a 40% increase compared to the same period in 2025. In addition, the Australian Government handed over physiotherapy equipment to Kratie Provincial Referral Hospital in July 2026, further strengthening rehabilitation services and improving access to quality care for people in the province and surrounding areas. We will continue expending support to Kampong Speu Provincial Referral Hospital in September 2026.
Through the ACCESS 2 program and its partners, Exceed Worldwide, OIC Cambodia, HI, and Provincial Referral Hospitals, Australia has supported the establishment of HBRUs with PO services in 2024, as well as Speech Therapy services in early 2026 at Kratie Provincial Referral Hospital. In addition, a Physiotherapy Unit was established at Kampong Cham Provincial Referral Hospital in mid-2025. These initiatives mark important milestones in strengthening comprehensive rehabilitation services for people in Siem Reap, Kampong Cham, Kratie, and surrounding provinces.
The handover of physiotherapy equipment will help strengthen rehabilitation services and improve access to quality care for people recovering from injuries, stroke, non-communicable diseases, and age-related conditions. The equipment will also enhance the capacity of health workers and help ensure that rehabilitation services are available to those who need them most.
This initiative is part of Australia’s commitment to supporting Cambodia in building a rehabilitation system that is accessible, inclusive, resilient, and people-centred.
The contribution also represents another significant milestone in the partnership between Australia, the Ministry of Health, Provincial Health Departments, and local health authorities to strengthen rehabilitation services across Cambodia.
At a recent physiotherapy equipment handover ceremony in Kratie, H.E Dr Ngov Kang, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health and a member of the ACCESS 2 Steering Committee (ASC), expressed appreciation for Australia’s valued partnership and ongoing support in strengthening rehabilitation services within Cambodia’s health system.
