From March 25 to 28, 2025, OIC Cambodia successfully conducted Level 1 Training (Round 2) under the project “Integrating Speech Therapy (ST) Knowledge and Practice into Cambodia’s Services and Workforce.” Supported by ACCESS 2, the project initiatives to enhance the accessibility, quality, and sustainability of speech therapy in Cambodia, particularly in Kampong Speu and Kratie provinces.
The training brought together community outreach workers and social service representatives, including members of the Commune Committee for Women and Children (CCWC), Village Health Support Groups (VHSG), and healthcare workers. Over three and a half days, 24 participants (19 women, and 0 persons with disabilities) took in interactive sessions, hands-on exercises, and in-depth discussions of the training focused on:
- Supporting their basic knowledge and skills on early identification and referral mechanisms to get speech therapy (ST).
- Improving their knowledge and skills on basic strategies so they can guide parents in using daily activities to support their children’s speech development at home.
- Promoting community awareness of speech, language, and communication difficulties (SLCD), and the demands for speech therapy (ST).
By equipping local health and social service workers with these essential skills, OIC Cambodia and its partners are ensuring that people in rural areas have better access to speech therapy support.
This training is part of a broader commitment to integrating speech therapy into Cambodia’s healthcare system, ensuring that children and adults with communication challenges receive the support they need.
ACCESS 2 remains dedicated to its partnership with Cambodian government stakeholders and Strategic Implementing Partners to reinforce inclusive policies, foster capacity building, and promote equitable service provision. The continued proactive involvement of local authorities and stakeholders is essential for achieving sustainable, high-quality services and ensuring that persons with disabilities can access the support they need in Cambodia.
